19 Sep 2008 McCain and Obama Advisors to Debate Asia Policy, September 22 Senior foreign policy advisors to presidential candidates Senator McCain and Senator Obama will debate the future of U.S. foreign policy toward the Asia-Pacific on September 22. The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is hosting the debate to help inform the public of the presidential candidates’ views toward this important region. The next U.S. administration will need an effective Asia policy to address challenges ranging from global warming to traditional and nontraditional security threats as well as maintaining prosperity.
12 Sep 2008 NBR Launches New Volume on What the President Should Know NBR will launch Strategic Asia 2008—09: Challenges and Choices at two public events on September 18. The first event—“Challenges and Choices in Asia” at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, Kenney Auditorium, from 8:00–11:30 a.m.—will feature a keynote address from Senator Chuck Hagel and presentations by select volume authors. The second event—“Asia’s Wildcards: Pakistan, North Korea, and Iran”—will take place on Capitol Hill from 1:00–3:00 p.m. in 628 Dirksen Senate Office Building.
5 Sep 2008 China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Annual Conference Volume On September 17, 2008, The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) and the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College will officially release a new book titled The "People’" in the PLA: Recruitment, Training, and Education in China’s Military edited by Roy D. Kamphausen, Andrew Scobell, and Travis Tanner. The book launch event will be co-hosted by and held at the Brookings Institution and will feature PLA experts from government and academia. Copies of the book will be available at the event.
4 Aug 2008 NBR Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony in Seattle's University District The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on August 4th at Eagleson Hall at the University of Washington to celebrate the construction of a building where NBR will be permanently housed. The new structure will be named George F. Russell, Jr. Hall in honor of NBR’s longtime chairman.
